If summer is over and winter hasn’t even begun, why do some homes still struggle with hot and cold spots? Unless you want to experience every type of climate as you walk through your home, it might be time to get to the bottom of the issue.
HVAC systems aren’t one size fits all. Your home and family have varying heating and cooling specifications based on the person, the room, the size of the home, and your budget. If your system is letting you down on one or more occasions, it might be obvious why.
Your HVAC: The Life Force of Your Home
You probably have one of three types of heating and cooling systems:
Central
Room
Ductless mini-split
Ductless systems offer the same level of control as central systems but without ductwork. A central system distributes air through every vent in the home. With central HVAC, your home is either zoned or all spaces are controlled by one thermostat.
For a system to offer zoning, each room requires its own thermostat for more temperature control. If your home relies on room units, you still benefit from temperature control but only in rooms with the system installed.
How Does Zoning Help?
If you have a large home or require certain spaces to be at a different temperature, a zoned system is the answer. For instance, your living room might need to be cooler if it has several large windows compared to the bedroom, which needs to keep you warm as you sleep. We’ve seen plenty of temperature struggles between family members over the years, but nothing solves these squabbles quite like personal thermostats.
Not only does zoning improve everyone’s comfort, but it also helps maintain energy efficiency. Rather than several units around the home, one system pushes and redirects air with dampers. Plus, there won’t be any more battles at the thermostat, which cause your system to cycle from warm to cool air constantly.
Minimizing Hot & Cold Spots
Hot and cold flashes are rarely enjoyable. There’s no need to put up with them any longer since the Bacon Plumbing, Heating, Air & Electric team is here to help. When we inspect your system, there will be three things we’ll be looking at:
How your system is zoned, if at all
The size of your system relative to the size of your home
The ductwork
Even with a zoned system, it’s possible the design of the zones is not sufficiently meeting your family’s needs. Poor zoning can also be caused by improper sizing of the system. When your HVAC was installed, the techs likely made a recommendation based on the number of spaces and size of your family at the time. A bigger system might be needed if you added on any spaces to your home or if your family has grown since then.
Lastly, our team will perform a thorough check of any ductwork. New issues with your heating or cooling may be a single component within the system, or it may just be that your ducts aren’t well insulated. Small leaks can lead to fluctuating temperatures in many areas of your home.
Complete comfort isn’t that far away. Schedule an HVAC inspection to keep your heating and cooling consistent and effortless.
